Duriing World War II, a 5 year old French girl and a 10 year old boy, form a friendship forged out of the pain of losing their families to the Germans and somehow find a way to deal with their pain by creating a cemetary for dead animals, stealing crosses from churches to honor their graves. Winner of the 1952 Bafta for Best Picture. Never gained the recognition it deserved in France but was a big success in other countries with its moving depiction of how Innocence is lost and destroyed by War. What an exquisite movie. And the music plucks my heart strings. And Brigitte Fossey plays her role impeccably. It is a movie I have cherished since seeing it for the first time when I was a child. The part towards the end of the movie where the little girl hears someone mention the name Michel jogs her memory of that boy and she cries, “Michel, Michel . . .” never fails to bring tears to my eyes.
